Description
These Rations, also known as IMPs (Individual Meal Plan) or MRE ( Meals Ready to Eat). Preppers, Hunters and Outdoor enthusiasts like these as they will put 1000-1200 calories in 1 meal. Lots of food! Breakfast entree, dessert, beverage mixes, snacks, and all necessary utensils and condiments. These are best served Hot, the menus are “comfort food” designed to boost morale. It’s a lot better than granola bars and energy drinks. If you are ‘On the Move’ and no time to slow down, the main entrees can be (and have been) consumed cold, tear of a corner and squeeze, just to get the calories in and no time to slow down to warm them up.
The main entree, a bread option like burger bun, tortilla or corn bread, instant coffee, electrolyte drink crystals (cough* Gatorade* cough) often a fruit dessert (Apple, Peach, Pear slices in syrup) sometimes a candy bar, or protein bar. Oat cereal, snack pouches (yogourt coated almonds, chocolate covered coffee beans or beef jerky), Tic-tacs, a powdered vanilla or chocolate shake, peanut butter, berry jams, ketchup and hot sauce. Plus a spork, heavy duty paper towel, moist towelette, matches, tactical ziploc bag. A couple cases in the basement, cottage or bug to location and they can sit for decades in a temperature stable environment, so you are Armageddon ready! These rations have a manufacture date, a 3 year shelf life but Army Public Affairs says,
Although an IMP’s expiry date is three years from the date it is assembled, it is still safe to eat for quite some time afterwards as long as the pouch is not damaged and the IMP has been properly stored.
“Shelf life is related not to food safety but to the sensory quality of the food. We take into account that after three years, the bread may be too dry or the texture and appearance of the fruit may not be as interesting,” she said. “But because the main components are sterilized, you can open a ration and if the retort pouch is intact, the content is still good to eat because the sterile environment remains. ”
If you prefer eating over not eating, you could go through a few meals in that time span.
